The Y44 engine has OHV cylinder head design with 16 valves (2 per cylinder) and a 4-barrel carburetor. Since 1975 it has an electronically controlled fuel system and emission regulation technology, called NAPS (Nissan Anti Pollution System)*.
With an 8.6:1 compression ratio the power and torque outputs are 204 PS (200 hp, 150 kW) at 4800 rpm and 343 Nm (34.9 kg·m, 253 lbf·ft) at 3200 rpm. The Nissan Y44E has 338 Nm (34.5 kg·m, 252 lbf·ft) of torque at 3,200rpm.
*NAPS (Nissan Anti Pollution System). The initial introduction of NAPS technology was the installation of an exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve), followed with the addition of a catalytic converter and an air pump that added oxygen into the exhaust to promote higher temperatures in the catalytic converter, thus cleaning the exhaust further. The Y44E was the first NAPS engine.
