The engine has an aluminum alloy cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) two valves per cylinder, electronically controlled indirect fuel injection system ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System) and water-cooled Toyota CT12B turbocharger with boost pressure up to 0.8 bar. The engine is equipped with the EGR system.

The Toyota first version of 1KZ-TE produced 130 PS (96 kW; 129 HP) at 3,600 rpm of horsepower and 332 Nm (33.9 kg·m; 245.0 ft·lb) at 2,000 rpm of torque. Redline is 4400 rpm. Later version with intercooler produced from 140 PS (103 kW; 138 HP) at 3,600 rpm to 147 PS (108 kW; 145 HP) at 3,600 rpm of horsepower and up to 343 Nm (35.0 kg·m; 253.1 ft·lb) at 2,000 rpm of torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 1 – 1nd generation engine

Cylinder block

The cylinder block has a monoblock high-strength cast-iron structure with the five-bearing-support system. The cylinder bores were plateau honed for more efficient piston ring sealing. The 1KZ-TE engine is equipped with a fully balanced steel crankshaft that has five main journals and operated on aluminum alloy bearings.

The connecting rods are made from lightweight carbon steel and each rod has an internal oil passage which supplied an oil gallery in the piston. The pistons are made from aluminum alloy and an FRM (fiber reinforced metal) top ring groove to improve wear resistance. Each piston is fitted with two compression and one oil control rings. The cylinder bore is 96.0 mm (3.78 in), piston stroke is 103.0 mm (4.06 in) and compression ratio rating is 21.2:1.

Cylinder head

The 1KZ-TE has an aluminum alloy cylinder head with a cross-flow configuration which is mounted on a steel laminate type head gasket and had plastic region tightening bolts. The engine has single overhead (SOHC) high-quality steel camshaft and two valves per cylinder: one intake and one exhaust (8 valves in total). The camshaft is driven by a timing belt and gears.

Intake valves are 42.5 mm (1.6732 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 37.0 mm (1.4567 in). Intake duration is 218° and exhaust duration is 236°. The Toyota 1KZ-TE engine does not have hydraulic lifters, so special shims are used to adjust the valve clearance. Shims are available in 17 sizes from 2.50 mm (0.0984 in) to 3.30 mm (0.1299 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).

  1. Hi, I have a 4runner 1KZ-T and want to calibrate injector myself but I did not found where to buy a kit of adjusting shims. Do you know where?. Best Regards, M. Wtges. Thanks

  2. I have a Toyota LN 107 with a 3L engine and would like to swap this engine with a 1KZ-TE engine. Will it work? I would like to hear from the experts

    • The 3l is a powerfuller engine with a 12mm injector pump and new injectors and a decent turbo if u need help with all this jump onto my page on Facebook page Pelli turbos. We make anywhere from 160rwhp on mild setups upto around 200hp on bigger jobs. These engines will also take 30 psi all day everyday with no side affects a few of ours are near 70 psi and still happy after years of use for example

      • G’day mate, I heard the 3Ls wouldn’t handle an aftermarket turbo?
Having said that they have iron heads don’t they? Tough little engines.. I would have loved a turbo on mne but was told they cant handle it…
That’s interesting that you have found them to be fine…

  3. j’ai un Toyota année 2000, moteur 1 kz-te, j’ai pas de fuite d’huile, mais il manque d’huile, a chaque semaine je dois ajouter d’huile.

    • hi, jafa here. want to ask group team. i use 1kz te engine with automatic transmission. how much volume to fill in into automatic gearbox

    • Hi
Please help me with information on where I can get a remanufactured Toyota 1KZ-TE turbo/diesel 3.0L engine.I will be very grateful to get a positive response from you.

  4. A BLESSED day to you,i know of a fact that the TOYOTA 1KZTE is a super duty engine!!..
But how can i get a remanufactured engine from your store or from JAPAN and what is the coast?
i am in JAMAICA.you can email me in reply please.

  5. A blessed day to you, whats is the best brand CYLINDER LINER KIT I CAN USE IN MY TOYOTA 1KZTE
    TURBO DIESEL 3.0 LTR

  6. Did anyone actually proof read any of this? The 1kzte engine is a 4 cylinder engine that doesn’t have balance shafts.

It’s also has 2 valves per cylinder which doesn’t total 10 valves, as it is only a 4 cylinder, not a 5 cylinder.

  7. I’m looking for a 1kz engine for my 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser how much would it cost and land in jamaica

  8. My 1KZ Diesel engine is hard starting with less power even after blowing air filter and changed Diesel filter, what could be the problem?
