Nissan GA15DE engineThe Nissan GA15DE is a 1.5 liter (1,498 cc, 91.41 cu-in) straight-four, four-stroke cycle, liquid-cooled gasoline engine from the Nissan GA-family.

The Nissan GA15DE has a cast-iron block and aluminum alloy cylinder head with double overhead camshaft, and multi-point fuel injection system.

Cylinder bore and the piston stroke is 73.6 mm (2.90 in) and 88.0 mm (3.46 in), respectively. The compression ratio is 9.9:1. It produces 106.0 PS (78.0 KW; 104.0 HP) at 6,000 rpm and 135.0 Nm (13.8 kg·m; 99.6 lbf·ft) at 4,000 rpm.

It was used in the Nissan Sunny B14, Nissan Pulsar N15 and Nissan Presea R11 (Japan Domestic Market, JDM), Nissan Rasheen, Nissan Wingroad / AD Y10.

Cylinder block

The GA15DE has a cast-iron cylinder block, bore is 73.6 mm (2.898 in) and stroke is 88.0 mm (3.465 in). The pistons are each fitted with two compression rings and a single oil ring. For some markets, there was a modification with a single compression ring. The crankshaft for GA15DE engine supported by five main bearings. The crankshaft is the same as on the GA16DE engine, but the GA14DE engine has differences in the crankshaft center distance.

Cylinder head

The engine has an aluminum cylinder head with two chain-driven overhead camshafts and sixteen valves (four per cylinder). The GA15DE has two timing chains. Intake valves are 29 mm in diameter, intake duration is 222 °, and the exhaust valves are 24 mm, exhaust duration is 222 °. The GA15DE does not have hydraulic lifters, so special shims are used to adjust the valve clearance.

Head tightening procedure and torque specs:

Problems and malfunctions

The Nissan GA15DE is reliable and durable. The engine has two timing chains, their service life is about 150,000 miles of mileage (200,000-250,000 km). The valve clearance needs to be adjusted every 30,000 miles of mileage (40,000-50,000 km). The GA15DE motor life expectancy is 200,000 miles of mileage (300,000 km) or more.

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting shim so valve clearance comes within specified values.

Shims are available in 50 sizes from 2.00 mm (0.0787 in) to 2.98 mm (0.1173 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).

M = 0.52 mm
N = 2.10 + (0.52 – 0.37) = 2.25 mm, so we need a shim with code 225 or TS225.

Whenever valve clearances are adjusted to cold specifications, check that the clearances satisfy hot specifications and adjust again if necessary.

  3. I am heaving a problem with nissan GA-15 engine (My cooling fan is automatic due to thermostat valve but when fan starts running,rpm automatically increases about 1500 to 2000,when it stops running rpm goes to normal) you have any solution for it how I solve this problem.

    I have GA-15 for Nissan Sunny, damaged valves due to timing chain problem couple of days ago. We have opened the engine and trying to replace new valves but there are no signs on timing chain and nobody knows here how to fix it.
    Kindly send me a diagram or any clue that we can fix it in a right way.

  7. I have a Nissan Rasheen with a GA15DE engine, the engine doesn’t seem to have power no matter how much i push the accelerator down, the vehicle max speed is 130km/h and when it’s ascending it drops upto 60km/h. What causes this problem?

    • I have a Nissan pulsar GA15 is smoking.I took the head and block to engineers and fix it back with new pistons and rings but is still smoking showing oil on top of pistons what might be the problem
