Toyota 1KZ-T

Toyota 1KZ-TThe Toyota 1KZ-T is a 3.0 l (2,982 cc, 181.97 cu-in) four cylinders, four-stroke cycle water-cooled turbocharged internal combustion diesel engine, manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation.

The 1KZ-T engine has a cast-iron block with 96.0 mm (3.78 in) cylinder bores and a 103.0 mm (4.06 in) piston stroke for a capacity of 3.0 l. Compression ratio rating is 21.2:1. The engine has an aluminum alloy cylinder head with single overhead camshaft (SOHC), mechanical indirect fuel injection system and Toyota CT12B turbocharger.

The Toyota first version of 1KZ-T produced 126 PS (93 kW; 125 HP) at 3,600 rpm of horsepower and 287 Nm (29.3 kg·m; 211.8 ft·lb) at 2,000 rpm of torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 1 – 1nd generation engine
  • KZ – Engine family
  • T – Turbocharged

Cylinder block

The cylinder block has a monoblock high-strength cast-iron structure with the five-bearing-support system. The cylinder bores were plateau honed for more efficient piston ring sealing. The 1KZ-T engine is equipped with a fully balanced steel crankshaft that has five main journals and operated on aluminum alloy bearings.

The connecting rods are made from lightweight carbon steel and each rod has an internal oil passage which supplied an oil gallery in the piston. The pistons are made from aluminum alloy. Each piston is fitted with two compression and one oil control rings. The cylinder bore is 96.0 mm (3.78 in), piston stroke is 103.0 mm (4.06 in) and compression ratio rating is 21.2:1.

Cylinder head

The 1KZ-T has an aluminum alloy cylinder head with a cross-flow configuration which is mounted on a steel laminate type head gasket and had plastic region tightening bolts. The engine has single overhead (SOHC) high-quality steel camshaft and two valves per cylinder: one intake and one exhaust (8 valves in total). The camshaft is driven by a timing belt and gears.

Intake valves are 42.5 mm (1.6732 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 37.0 mm (1.4567 in). The Toyota 1KZ-T engine does not have hydraulic lifters, so special shims are used to adjust the valve clearance. Shims are available in 17 sizes from 2.50 mm (0.0984 in) to 3.30 mm (0.1299 in), in steps of 0.05 mm (0.0020 in).

  1. I have a toyota prado with automatic transmission. I’d like to inquire what other 4 cylinder toyota engine can be used to replace my old 1KZ-TE engine. I want to replace the engine and the transmission with a stick (manual).
