Toyota 2L

Toyota 2LThe Toyota 2L is a 2.4 L (2,446 cc, 149.3 cu·in) four cylinders, four-stroke cycle water-cooled naturally aspirated internal combustion diesel engine, manufactured by the Toyota Motor Corporation.

The 2L engine has a cast-iron cylinder block with 92.0 mm (3.62 in) cylinder bores and a 92.0 mm (3.62 in) piston stroke. Compression ratio rating was 22.3:1. The motor has a cast iron cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft (SOHC) with two valves per cylinder and indirect injection design.

Later version the 2L-II is an upgrade of the 2L. The cylinder bore and the piston stroke remains the same. The most significant change is that the camshaft lifts the valve directly via tappet instead of a rocker arm. The valve clearance is adjusted using shims.

The Toyota 2L produced from 76 PS (56 kW; 75 HP) at 4,000 rpm to 90 PS (66 kW; 88 HP) at 4,200 rpm of maximum horsepower and from 155 N·m (15.8 kg·m, 114.2 ft·lb) at 2,400 rpm to 165 N·m (16.8 kg·m, 121.6 ft·lb) at 2,400 rpm of maximum torque.

The breakdown of the engine code is as follows:

  • 2 – 2nd generation engine
  • L – Engine family

Cylinder block

The cylinder block is made of cast iron. The crankshaft is supported by five bearings on the inside of the crankcase. The crankshaft bearings are made of aluminum alloy. The crankshaft is integrated with balance weights which are cast along with it for balance.

The cylinder bore is 92.0 mm (3.62 in), piston stroke is 92.0 mm (3.62 in) and compression ratio rating is 22.3:1.

    • 2L-ii has an egr, behind the engine between firewall, u will see a pipe from cylinder head to intake manifold,if not u don’t have. the simplest erg, now delete egr, its just for emmisions, searh YouTube ,u will know.

  1. Hi, I just want to know, after reseting my timing belt warning light, when will it warn or light up again? After 100,000k km or 150,000k km? Pls help. Thanks.

  2. Will the 2L-II directly replace a 22R motor in a 1986 toyota pickup without modifications?

    • You will need the bellhousing for a 2L engine which will bolt up to your transmission. I did a conversion with a 91 Toyota pickup like that.

  3. In my Toyota Hilux Surf 1993 model there is a 2L-TE engine but would like to swap it with a 1KD or 2KD can these engines fit and function properly in my SUV.

  4. 1988 2.4lt Diesel dble cab. No Electronics!! Hooray!
Put new head on 2012. Fitted later model exhaust pipe with multiple cuts & welds inc original flange to attach to manifold. Pity.
Why is there multiple metal shim manifold gaskets? Aware of need for expansion.
Looking for manifold bolt torque. Thanks for valve clearances as 2021 is 1st check of valve clearances..just keeps going!

  5. Good people how are you
I want to convert my 2L of an 2Lt engine reboring to a 3L block what should I do as what should I change inside after reboring it?

    • Met mijn motor is het ook gebeurt, naar 3L herboren. Ofwel steek je bredere segmenten, het goedkoopste, of wel, wat beter is, de nodige zuigers. Wat duurder in geld maar beter voor de compressie.

  6. I have Toyota 2l diesel 2.4 engine. My dipstick broke off inside block. Now I don’t have reading from dipstick
Can u please forward me correct dimention thank you
