Cylinder block

The 2UZ–FE engine has a cast-iron cylinder block in a V arrangement at a bank angle of 90°. This engine’s firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The crankshaft is supported by 5 bearings. These bearings are made of aluminum alloy. The engine is equipped with a fully balanced steel crankshaft with five journals and eight counterweights.

The 2UZ-FE engine used forged and sintered connecting rods. Pistons are made of high temperature-resistant aluminum alloy. Piston pins are the full-floating type. After 2007 the piston shape was changed and oil jets were introduced to cool the pistons. To conserve mass, plastic region tightening bolts are used for the crankshaft bearing caps and connecting rod caps. The Toyota 2UZ–FE motor has two compression and single oil control rings.

A 94.0 mm (3.7 in) cylinder bore and 84.0 mm (3.31 in) piston stroke give the 2UZ-FE engine a total of 4,663 cc of displacement. Compression ratio rating is 9.6:1 for engines before 2007 and 10.0:1 for engines after 2007.

Cylinder head

The cylinder heads are made of aluminum alloy, with a cross-flow type intake and exhaust layout and with pentroof type combustion chambers. The 2UZ-FE engine has dual overhead camshafts design (DOHC) with four valves per cylinder (32 valves in total). The intake camshafts are driven by the timing belt, and a gear on the intake camshaft engages with a gear on the exhaust camshaft to drive it. In 2007, the engine began to use the VVTi (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent) system.

The intake valve head diameter is 34.5 mm (1.3583 in) and the exhaust valve diameter is 29.0 mm (1.1417 in). To actuate the valves, this engine used inner-shim type, steel valve lifters that are crowned on the side-sliding portion to reduce friction. For the engine version after 2007, lead-free valve seats are used.

The 2UZ-FE motor was not equipped with hydraulic valve lifters, therefore special shims are used to adjust the valve clearance.

The early version of the 2UZ-FE engine had a cast aluminum intake manifold, a plastic intake manifold was used for the 2UZ-FE engine after 2007.

Valve clearance adjustment data

Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve shim so valve clearance comes within specified values.

R = Thickness of removed valve shim
N = Thickness of new valve shim
M = Measured valve clearance

Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]

Valve shims are available in 41 sizes range from 2.00 mm (0.0787 in) to 2.80 mm (0.1102 in), in steps of 0.02 mm (0.0008 in).

Example (exhaust valve):
R = 2.10 mm
M = 0.52 mm
N = 2.10 + (0.45 – 0.30) = 2.25 mm.

  1. Am looking for a schematic wiring pin outs for a 2UZ-FE for the ECM, am modifying this engine to fit to a FJ40

  2. What is the configuration of the cylinders? Are odd cylinders on the passenger side beginning front to back with the 3rd cylinder and even on driver side beginning with number 1 cylinder?
